The three competencies of the E.L.A. program are:
1. Uses language/talk to communicate and learn
2. Reads and listens to written, spoken and media texts
3. Produces written, spoken and media texts
* Each competency counts for one third of the final mark.
Students will explore the four competencies by studying:

-Figurative Language: simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration, allusion & hyperbole
-Expressive Writing: journals, responses & reflections
-Poetic Writing: poems, narratives, scripts & short stories
-Transactional Writing: research essays, letters & speeches
Students will learn the following conventions of writing: topic sentence, the paragraph, spelling, parts of speech, homonyms, dictionary usage, quotation marks and punctuation rules.
Reading: Since reading is an integral part of the E.L.A. program, students will be reading and analyzing such things as novels, short stories, poems and articles throughout the year.
Evaluation: Students will be marked on the writing process (rough drafts, editing, revision), content (ideas, expression, creativity, originality) and mechanics (grammar, spelling, writing conventions). Evaluation will be based on both short and long-term assignments.
CVR ENGLISH DEPARTMENT POLICIES ( Grades 7-11)
In an effort to encourage student autonomy, accountability, and ownership over their work and success in the course, the following policies apply:
LATE WORK and other deductions POLICY
Any work submitted late without a signed note from a parent or doctor, or advance request for an extension (48 hrs. min.) will be deducted at a rate of 5% per day including weekends (10% for 2 days).
Students with an IEP which entitles them to “extra time for class work” are allowed up to 7 days without penalty. After that, late work will be deducted at a rate of 5% per day.
Any work NOT HANDED IN will receive a mark of zero (0) in all competencies evaluated.
RE-SUBMISSION POLICY
All work that has been already done and graded, and which has earned lower than an 80% before late penalties, may be redone and resubmitted within 10 days of the teacher having returned it. Students MUST (1) begin with a serious effort and submit their best work in the first place, (2) be serious about their revisions and learning from their mistakes, and (3) not allow these revisions to interfere with completing current assignments due. The important part is that students learn, no matter how many tries it takes.
Late penalties which applied on the first submission will not be applied a second time.
The original work must be submitted along with the revised work.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
Cheating & plagiarism are both very serious offences with very serious consequences.
